COVID-19 UPDATE

PLEASE KEEP YOURSELF AND OTHERS SAFE.

Thankyou for supporting Gifted Awareness Week Australia.  We are committed to raising awareness through our events, blog posts and Facebook page, however with COVID-19 on everyone’s mind, we ask all participants to stay away from GAW events if you are feeling unwell, have just returned from overseas, or been in contact with friends who have been overseas or unwell.

Please also check event details in case the event you planned to attend has been cancelled. Even if you cannot attend a planned event, you can still join our awareness raising campaign by posting and re-posting content on social media, liking our Facebook page and liking individual posts.

You can also share resources and  blog posts with your friends, colleagues and child’s school. Together we can make a difference, virus or no virus!

AAEGT Event

Thriving Not Just Surviving: An interactive online presentation of the latest research on grouping in gifted education

DATESunday 23 May 2021
TIMEMorning
SCHOOL/ORGANISATIONAAEGT
TARGET AUDIENCEParents and teachers
DESCRIPTION

A Zoom presentation by Dr Karen Rogers and Dr Peta Hay.

Abstract: Educators aim to give all of their students an optimal learning environment so that they can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Sadly, many gifted students experience inappropriate educational provisions due to educators’ misinformation and misconceptions about appropriate programming. Many gifted students simply survive school; tragically, some even drop out of school despite their high potential. It is critical that parents and educators understand how to challenge and encourage our gifted students by using evidence-based educational provisions.

Few educators would disagree that grouping students is important for learning given it provides important opportunities for observation and modelling (Bandura, 1977; 1986). However, differences arise around how to group students. Gifted/talented students do not respond to grouping in the same way as their same age peers; they generally thrive in like-minded/like-achieving groupings (Steenbergen-Hu, Makel & Olszewski-Kubilius, 2016). In this workshop we will analyse the most recent meta-analysis data on gifted and talented students comparing their academic, social, and emotional outcomes in ability/achievement groupings with mixed-ability groupings (via effect sizes).

For parents, this session will provide good information they might present to their respective schools to ensure that their own children will have their needs for grouping addressed. Teachers who participate will be invited to consider the ways in which research may apply to different students’ needs, classrooms, and schools. This presentation will actively engage teachers and parents in figuring out how to apply the grouping research that is presented. It is expected that discussion will be lively, yet useful!

Thriving as a Twice Exceptional Child: A Toolbox of Strategies for the Classroom and Home  AAEGT Affiliate Event

Monday 24 May 2021

TIME

Evening

SCHOOL/ORGANISATION

Gifted WA

TARGET AUDIENCE

Parents and teachers (free for GiftedWA Members)

DESCRIPTION

Twice Exceptional (2e) children are unique little people that come to school with incredible strengths to offer. Unfortunately, for many of these children, they go unnoticed in the classroom looking like average learners or children with behavioural problems. In many situations, these children end up on behavioural plans, with remediation strategies. This eventuates in disengagement from their learning, frustration from the parents and a child that isn’t having their gifted needs catered to.

Melissa Morrison has recently had two of her own children diagnosed with ADHD and Autism and she would like to walk parents and teachers through this diagnosis process. She will also explore the perspectives of parents who have navigated this process and the frustration and concerns that have gone unnoticed throughout the IEP process. In this presentation, she will share a toolbox of strategies that she has used to help 2e children in the classroom that not only cater to their weaknesses but take into account their innate desire to learn. This professional learning event will be designed to provide strategies to help parents and teachers navigate the consultation process so that all people involved in the child’s education feel like their concerns and needs are being met.
